Audit and assurance As the name implies, “assurance” services should provide reassurance about the quality of information being used. While audit services related to historical financial statements are the most common type of assurance service, as outlined below, Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s assurance department provides assurance or attest services for a broader range of financial and even non-financial data. Often, “assurance” services are intended to provide a foundation for better access to capital, or to promote the financial discipline of an organization. At AGH, a review of the numbers is just the beginning. Each year, AGH conducts financial statement audits for organizations throughout Kansas and the region. Corporate finance Keeping a business in good financial shape from day to day is challenging enough. Employee benefits services (EBS) With a labor shortage projected to hit hard in the next few years – and some industries already in critical undersupply of qualified staff – employee benefits have become a much more important part of every company’s strategy to recruit and retain the best skilled employees. Family business consulting Family businesses are more prevalent and have a stronger impact on the economy than many realize. While Kansas’ large corporations (many of which began as family-owned companies) may be more prominent in the news, family businesses account for, nationwide, 89% of all business income-tax returns and contribute 64% of the gross domestic product. Yet, the size and composition of these firms can make them vulnerable. Typically, only a third of family-owned businesses survive into the second generation, even though the majority of them hope to maintain family control of the business. Technology services group Often, choosing appropriate technology is a critical part of implementing financial controls and reporting. Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s technology services group (TSG) grew out of our clients’ need for technology counsel along with other services the firm was providing. Our clients turn to us for help in finding, evaluating and choosing the best accounting software for their particular business needs. They ask us to ensure that the software runs on hardware that is appropriately powerful, cost-effective, and durable. And they ask us to troubleshoot, train and help keep a technology-dependent business running when problems arise in any of these areas, providing services ranging from custom programming to e-commerce to network security and backup.
