As the name implies, “assurance” services should provide reassurance about the quality of information being used. While audit services related to historical financial statements are the most common type of assurance service, as outlined below, Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s assurance department provides assurance or attest services for a broader range of financial and even non-financial data. Often, “assurance” services are intended to provide a foundation for better access to capital, or to promote the financial discipline of an organization.
At AGH, a review of the numbers is just the beginning. We believe that a financial statement or internal audit should also be a forum to discover and communicate real business opportunities to our clients – delivering peace of mind, profit-improvement ideas, risk management, and, of course, excellent client service.
Each year, AGH conducts financial statement audits for organizations throughout Kansas and the region. AGH is the largest auditor in Kansas and one of the largest providers of trusted advisor services in the Midwest. In turn, our clients benefit from the broad range of businesses and financial environments our assurance professionals have worked in coast to coast.
Our clients include mid-size to large organizations from all the Midwest's dominant industries. AGH enjoys a nationally recognized leadership position in many sectors based on the firm's history, experiences and skills within these industries. So not only can we bring a veteran team to bear on your assurance work, our professionals often have significant experience in your particular industry – making the engagement more efficient, effective, and tailored to your business.

With a labor shortage projected to hit hard in the next few years – and some industries already in critical undersupply of qualified staff – employee benefits have become a much more important part of every company’s strategy to recruit and retain the best skilled employees.
How can you set up an employee benefit plan that will help you meet your business goals? By working with Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s employee benefit specialists to design a plan attractive to your current and prospective employees, customized to your staff’s priorities and needs, and structured to reward the key employees most important to your organization or even begin to transition ownership.
Based on the structure that supports your organizational goals, our EBS specialists can create a plan for you, drawing from a broad array of benefits products. We then work with you to implement the plan successfully: helping you educate your employees about the plan, assisting in enrollment and counseling, and handling all employee service locally, including group education and one-on-one counseling with your staff.
That means employees who call in with questions reach a local benefit specialist familiar with your organization’s plan, rather than a 1-800 number operator supporting dozens or hundreds of plan’s callers. That “high-touch” service, combined with the support of a sophisticated technology platform that automates and speeds up transactions, means AGH can offer much more customization and personalized client service – at a price still competitive with other employee benefits companies.

- Benefit plan design
- Retirement plan recordkeeping
- Flexible spending arrangements (FSA, HRA, HSA)

Family businesses are more prevalent and have a stronger impact on the economy than many realize. While Kansas’ large corporations (many of which began as family-owned companies) may be more prominent in the news, family businesses account for, nationwide, 89% of all business income-tax returns and contribute 64% of the gross domestic product.
Yet, the size and composition of these firms can make them vulnerable. Typically, only a third of family-owned businesses survive into the second generation, even though the majority of them hope to maintain family control of the business.
Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s family business and organizational development group brings a unique blend of strategic facilitation and organizational development skills to bear on what can be a powerful mix of family, finances and business. We help you sort out the personal and family issues that can complicate and distract leadership from making good business decisions – or business pressures that can cause family tensions. Our end goal is to help your family business continue to grow, succeed, and transition to the next generation when you’re ready for that step.

Running a small-to-medium-size business often means wearing a number of different hats: chief financial officer, employee recruiter, tax preparer, board chair — sometimes all in the same day. That may work for a while, but when you’re ready for another pair of hands and access to specialized expertise, you may want to consider outsourcing.
Outsourcing can provide the convenience and cost-effectiveness of current industry knowledge, software and expertise – without requiring additional staff, space, or equipment.
Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s outsourcing services include payroll and timekeeping solutions, controller-by-the-hour, state and local tax assistance, and temporary or consulting human resources management. Staffing gaps created by employee illness, family leave, military service or sabbaticals can be filled weekly or monthly, as your needs dictate – or you may simply need periodic access to a type of expertise you don’t want to add as a full-time staffer.
AGH’s flexible outsourcing staff can provide services for you at your workplace (an on-site controller-by-the-hour, for example), or simply handle the project and keep you updated (payroll solutions, for example) — whatever your needs dictate. Either way, you add another brain and pair of hands to help you reach your organization’s goals without the expensive and time-consuming process of recruiting, hiring and training a new staff member.

- Controller-by-the-hour

After wages and the cost of producing a product or services, taxes are often one of an organization’s most significant expenses. Tax strategies that result in savings, improved cash flow or enhanced profitability can mean the difference between a bad year and a good one – or a good year and a GREAT one.
Your job is to help your organization grow and succeed. Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.’s tax specialists can help you do that by monitoring an increasingly complex tax environment, knowing your organization’s goals, and working to apply the tax code and regulations accurately in a way that benefits your organization.
Many firms can provide tax services. What we believe sets AGH apart is our commitment to both technical excellence in the tax planning and preparation, and top-notch service to our clients. That means we’re as rigorous in how we work to meet and exceed your expectations as we are in how we understand and apply the tax code.
